Paradise with Bullets
Shotgun Wedding
Director: Jason Moore
Cast: Josh Duhamel, Jennifer Lopez, Lenny Kravitz, Jennifer Coolidge, Sonia Braga, Cheech Marin, Steve Coulter, Callie Hernandez, Desmin Borges
Running Time: 1 hour 40 minutes
Film Rating: 6 out of 10
This film is now showing in cinemas in South Africa and will be on Amazon Prime from 27th January 2023.
Pitch Perfect director Jason Moore returns to the big screen an action comedy with Shotgun Wedding, an appropriate title for a film about a wedding that gets attacked by pirates. Fortunately the two stars of Shotgun Wedding, Jennifer Lopez (Out of Sight, Marry Me, Hustlers) and Josh Duhamel (Transformers, Bandit) make this crazy and bizarre film work through their sizzling onscreen chemistry.
Shotgun Wedding is about Darcy Rivera played by Lopez and Tom Fowler played by Duhamel who have a destination wedding on a tropical island in the Philippines. Both the couple’s crazy parents are there: Renata and Robert Rivera played respectively by Brazilian actress Sonia Braga (Kiss of the Spiderwoman) and Cheech Marin (From Dusk till Dawn, Machete) as are Tom’s parents Carol Fowler wonderfully played by Jennifer Coolidge (Promising Young Woman, Legally Blonde, American Pie) and Larry Fowler played by Steve Coulter.
Naturally with a destination wedding set in Paradise, everything is expected to go according to plan down to the last batch of glitteringly decorated pineapples. Except for Darcy and Tom’s wedding, despite the pre-wedding drama, a group of heavily armed Balinese pirates attack the wedding ceremony and put all the guests in the resort swimming pool demanding a multi-million dollar ransom otherwise they will start killing the guests.
Unfortunately for the pirates complete with crazy headgear, the bride and groom are nowhere to be found. Slowly despite their differences, Darcy and Tom work together to try and save themselves, their parents and friends from these pirates while trying to figure out who the real villain is.
Audiences should look out for singer and actor Lenny Kravitz (The Butler, The Hunger Games, Precious) as Darcy’s showy and jealous ex-boyfriend Sean Hawkins who arrives at the wedding via helicopter.
Director Jason Moore’s Shotgun Wedding is not serious entertainment but it is funny and enjoyable. Josh Duhamel and superstar singer turned actress Jennifer Lopez do brilliantly as the butt kicking couple ready to save their wedding. The best actors in the film are those playing the couple’s parents with a particular mention of the hilarious Jennifer Coolidge as mother of the groom. Coolidge kills the part, like literally.
If audiences enjoy some crazy entertainment, a film about paradise but with bullets then Shotgun Wedding is for you, complete with a tropical location, unbelievable stunts and a fantastic ensemble cast. Shotgun Wedding gets a film rating of 6 out of 10 and is recommended viewing for pure escapism.
My Favourite Husband
Being the Ricardo’s
Director: Aaron Sorkin
Cast: Nicole Kidman, Javier Bardem, J. K. Simmons, Nina Arianda, Jake Lacey, Clark Gregg, Christopher Denham, Tony Hale, Alia Sawkat
Film Rating: 8.5 out of 10
Running Time: 2 hours and 11 minutes
This film is only available to watch on Amazon Prime.
Despite the extremely limited release of Being The Ricardo’s, the casting genius of having Oscar winners Nicole Kidman (The Hours) and Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) play husband and wife pays off in this talkative Aaron Sorkin film pays off.
Kidman and Bardem are absolutely superb playing the film and TV star Lucille Ball and her Cuban husband Desi Arnaz and it is a real treat to watch both actors feed off each other’s immeasurable talent.
The tumultuous marriage of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz is vividly captured in Being The Ricardo’s as they work together on the hit TV show I Love Lucy, filming all the while in the late 1950’s in Los Angeles amidst the tail end of the McCarthyism Anti-Communism trials which affected the American Film and Television industry as Republican senator Joseph McCarthy targeted the entertainment industry as being a cesspool for communist sympathizers, whipping up Anti-Communist sentiment in America which was rife in the 15 years following the end of World War 2.
Audiences just need to read Arthur Miller’s The Crucible as a cultural point of reference for his allegorical play about the Salem Witch trials of 1692 in Massachusetts. Arthur Miller himself was targeted by the Committee for Un-American Activities.
Fortunately for writer and director Aaron Sorkin, Being the Ricardo’s is exceptionally well researched but what really shines through is the brilliant acting of Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem.
Both are experienced actors and their portrayal of Lucille Ball and the suave and charismatic Cuban entertainer Desi Arnaz is perfect. In actual fact, Javier Bardem is as good as Nicole Kidman and to add into this are the supporting cast most notably Oscar winner J. K. Simmons (Whiplash) playing drunken actor William Frawley.
There is a superb scene in Being the Ricardo’s when William Frawley takes Lucille Ball to a dive bar at 10am in Hollywood to escape the histrionics on the set of I love Lucy, which at that point in the late 1950’s was sponsored by the American Tobacco company Philip Morris to assuage her feelings of control and her constant suspicion of her Cuban husband Desi of committing adultery.
Like The Trial of the Chicago 7 spotlighted a particular event in American socio-political history, Being The Ricardo’s is a slice of American entertainment history superbly acted by Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem as all the suspicions surrounding infidelity and being a communist sympathiser are heightened on the night of the live filming of I Love Lucy. The rest is pure dress rehearsal.
If audiences can get to watch Being The Ricardo’s make sure to see it for the excellent performances by Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem, their combined acting talents are enthralling.
Being the Ricardo’s gets a film rating of 8.5 out of 10 and is highly recommended viewing.
The Prince of Queens
Coming 2 America
Director: Craig Brewster
Cast: Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Wesley Snipes, Shari Headley, Jermaine Fowler, Leslie Jones, Kiki Layne, Tracy Morgan, James Earl Jones, Morgan Freeman
Paramount Studios had plans to release this sequel theatrically but they sold the rights to Amazon Studios due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. Fortunately, Coming 2 America had a theatrical release in South Africa on Friday 5th March 2021.
Firstly, a big thank you to Ster Kinekor for sponsoring a ticket for the highly anticipated sequel to the 1988 John Landis directed film Coming to America, simply titled Coming 2 America reuniting the original cast Oscar nominee Eddie Murphy (Dream Girls) and Arsenio Hall as Prince Akeem and his faithful advisor Semmi.
Over 30 years later and Prince Akeem is married to the gorgeous Lisa played by Shari Headley and they have three lovely daughters as they preside over the mythical African kingdom of Zamunda. Akeem’s father, King Jaffe Joffer is dying and Akeem’s daughters cannot inherit the throne due to the law of patriarchal descent that only allows a male heir to inherit a royal throne. Legendary Hollywood star James Earl Jones (The Lion King, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, The Hunt for Red October) reprises his role as King Jaffe Joffer.
Akeem learns that he actually conceived a son while on his trip to America in the original film, thirty years earlier. Akeem’s son, now 30 Lavelle Junson played by Jermaine Fowler is living in Queens with his outrageous mother Mary played by Leslie Jones.
In the neighbouring African militarized kingdom controlled by General Izzi wonderfully played by Wesley Snipes (New Jack City, Expendables 3, One Night Stand), Izzi is threatening war against Akeem if his new found son does not marry Izzi’s daughter.
Akeem and Semmi fly to New York and arrive at the borough of Queens where they go in search of Lavelle and naturally have to bring the young prince and his crazy mother back with them to Africa.
The comic trick about the original Coming to America was that Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall played multiple characters and their comedic talents are used again quite successfully as they both take on multiple roles including two characters in a New York barber shop and a crazy priest.
Audiences should look out for rising star Kiki Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk) as the beautiful Meeka and cameo appearances by Morgan Freeman and Trevor Noah.
While Coming 2 America is funny, vibrant and colourful, Hustle & Flow director Craig Brewster does rely on too many flashbacks from the original John Landis film to keep this sequel grounded although there are some funny scenes especially Lavelle’s attempt to capture a lion’s whisker.
Unfortunately, Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall’s comic moments in Coming 2 America are limited in this version unlike in the original which was absolutely hilarious and back in the late 1980’s, they were not afraid to push the envelope. Thankfully Wesley Snipes performance as the flamboyant General Izzi is next level and really eye catching. It’s really great to see Wesley Snipes back on the big screen.
Ultimately, Coming 2 America is a very light and vibrant family comedy which luckily does not take itself too seriously and is perfect entertainment for the whole family.
Coming 2 America is recommended viewing at all cinemas in South Africa including Ster Kinekor and is also available on Amazon Prime for overseas territories. This much needed sequel to the original film gets a film rating of 6.5 out of 10 and is worth seeing for a good laugh.
